Quickie Hunt – Today’s Mission
Yesterday morning when I dropped my kids off at my parents house, I had one goal. That goal was to get out and hunt even if it just ended up being a quickie hunt. With a Honey Do list about a mile long, I knew that it was going to be extremely difficult to get out before she returned from work but I had my goal and I was sticking too it. The weather had been nasty for 3 or 4 days prior. Lots of rain, wind, and gloomy clouds. However, yesterday morning was gorgeous. Bright sunny skies and much calmer winds. As much as you wait for days like this to hit the woods well before the sun comes up, I was unable to make that happen.
Quickie Hunt – The Hunt
As luck would have it, I was in fact able to make it out for a quickie hunt. It was a mid day hunt during what was probably the warmest part of the day. But, with the sunny skies and the fact that it was the first nice day in the better part of a week, I listened to the old saying “you can’t shoot them from the couch!” and decided to give it a go. By the time I was done cleaning the entire house and going grocery shopping, I only had about 2 hours before my wife would be home. More than enough time to get to the stand for a quickie hunt. I was full of optimism as I pulled in to the funnel property and get dressed. I still had not yet found a good tree to climb with the climber so this time I decided to still hunt my way back to the area I wanted to be and find a spot to pop a squat when I got there.
Quickie Hunt Conclusion
To make a long story short, I was able to enjoy the warm sunshine and awesome weather for about an hour and a half without seeing a deer. Though this quickie hunt was a bust in terms of seeing deer, I can still consider the day a success because I was able to accomplish my goal of getting out in the woods, even if it was just a quickie hunt. During this time of the year, you never know when a mature buck will be on their feet and moving, especially when you have a wonderful spot like my funnel mixed with the first nice day after 3 or 4 days in a row of ugly weather. But, I have another hunting coming up, so stay tuned for that! I’m heading down to our Southern Illinois property to hunt from November 9th through the 11th. Hopefully I’m able to hit the front correctly and it makes for some awesome pre-rut action. Happy Hunting!
